How much does it cost to embroider a jacket
Real 2026 pricing for jacket embroidery. Full math by jacket type, placement (left-chest / back / full-back / sleeve), stitch count, and quantity — with a live calculator preset for the common left-chest logo on a mid-weight jacket.
The short answer
Left-chest logo on a jacket: $8–$20 per jacket. Mid-size back logo: $20–$50. Full-back varsity-style design: $50–$150. Nameplate or single name: $5–$10. Add 25–40% surcharge for puffer or insulated jackets, and $2–$5 per jacket for extra topping on fleece or Sherpa. Bulk pricing applies from ~12 units and up.

Pricing is embroidery only and excludes the blank jacket. Sourced from published rate cards at Queensboro, Stitch Logo Apparel, EmbroidMe / Fully Promoted, and independent shop rate sheets, then triangulated against the transparent per-stitch math on our cost-per-1,000-stitches benchmark page.
Jacket type — how the substrate changes the price
Not all jackets embroider the same. The material and construction dictate stabilizer choice, hooping difficulty, and whether the shop will even accept the job. Five substrates cover most orders:
- Softshell & coach jackets (easiest): flat woven face, minimal stretch, hoops cleanly. Standard cutaway backing. No surcharge. Blank cost $30–$70.
- Fleece & Sherpa full-zips: requires water-soluble topping to keep stitches from sinking into the pile. Adds $0.10–$0.30 per piece and 1–2 extra minutes of prep. Blank cost $15–$40.
- Denim & canvas work jackets: thick but flat. Hoops fine but the needle takes more wear — expect a small surcharge on very heavy 12+ oz canvas. Blank cost $25–$60.
- Unlined bombers: smooth outer shell, easy to hoop if unlined. Lined bombers require the shop to work through the outer layer without piercing the lining — 15–25% surcharge is common. Blank cost $30–$80.
- Puffer & insulated (hardest): insulation compresses unevenly under the hoop and rebounds after unhooping, needle can perforate down chambers, and stitching must stay in the outer shell. Expect 25–40% surcharge; some shops refuse. Blank cost $50–$200.
Rule of thumb: if the jacket has an air gap or fill you can compress with your finger, budget for the surcharge and confirm the shop will accept it before ordering blanks.

Placement — where the logo goes changes the math
Jackets offer more placement options than any other garment, and each has different labor implications:
- Left chest (standard): 3–4" wide, hoops with a standard cap-frame or slim-arm attachment. Fastest to hoop. Baseline pricing.
- Right chest / nameplate: same difficulty as left chest but often smaller (2–3" wide, single line of text). Slightly cheaper.
- Sleeve: requires a slim tubular arm attachment to hoop cleanly. Some machines can't do sleeves at all. Slight surcharge on shops that can.
- Mid-back (5–8"): hoops with a standard back frame. Roughly 3–4× the run time of a left chest because of stitch count, not difficulty.
- Full back (10–12"): exceeds most hoop sizes. Requires 2–4 hoopings with alignment marks between passes. Labor jumps by 5–10 minutes per re-hooping. This is where varsity-jacket pricing gets steep.
- Collar / cuff: difficult to hoop, small logos only, and requires cylinder-arm machines. Not all shops offer this.
Combining placements (chest + back + sleeve on one jacket) multiplies the setup cost but the discount on additional placements is real — expect 10–20% off the second placement when ordered together with the first.
Quantity discount curve
Jacket embroidery is more sensitive to quantity than other garments because the digitizing fee is amortized across the order and the hooping-setup time is a bigger share of the cost:
| Quantity | Left-chest price | Full-back price |
| 1 (one-off with digitizing) | $25–$45 | $100–$200 |
| 1 (with existing file) | $15–$22 | $65–$120 |
| 6–11 units | $12–$18 | $55–$100 |
| 12–24 units | $10–$15 | $50–$90 |
| 25–72 units | $8–$12 | $45–$80 |
| 72+ units | $6.50–$10 | $40–$70 |
Break-even on a new logo digitizing fee ($15–$50) is usually 3–5 jackets. Ordering 12+ in one batch is the biggest single lever after that.
Blank jacket cost — the other half of the total
Embroidery is only one line item. Blank jacket cost varies enormously by style and brand:
| Jacket type | Typical blank cost (wholesale) |
| Basic fleece full-zip | $15–$25 |
| Premium fleece (Sherpa) | $25–$40 |
| Softshell (Port Authority J317-tier) | $30–$45 |
| Premium softshell (North Face, Eddie Bauer) | $50–$85 |
| Coach jacket / unlined bomber | $25–$60 |
| Denim / canvas work jacket | $30–$65 |
| Insulated / puffer (light) | $50–$90 |
| Premium puffer (down) | $100–$200 |
| Varsity / letterman | $80–$180 |
Total finished cost = blank + embroidery + any surcharge. A branded corporate softshell with a left-chest logo at qty 24 lands around $40–$55 per jacket all-in. A varsity jacket with full-back embroidery at qty 12 lands around $150–$280 per jacket all-in.
DIY vs shop — when it makes sense
Home embroidery machines (Brother PE800-class or Ricoma EM1010-class) can handle a left-chest logo on a jacket comfortably. The math looks favorable on paper — thread, needle, and stabilizer come to about $2–$4 per jacket in materials. But three practical friction points push most jacket orders back to a shop:
- Hoop size limits: home machines top out at ~7"×12" hoops; anything mid-back or larger requires multiple re-hoopings with hand alignment, which is slow and error-prone.
- Puffer / lined jackets: hooping without piercing lining requires specialty backing and technique most home users don't have.
- Time value: a mid-back design at 15,000 stitches takes 20–25 minutes of run time plus 10 minutes of prep per jacket. Doing 12 jackets is 6+ hours of active time — usually cheaper to pay a shop.
Where DIY wins: 1–3 personal jackets with left-chest logos and an existing digitized file. Break-even against a shop is generally 4–6 jackets on left-chest work, sooner if the jacket is complex.
