Border type — merrowed vs laser-cut vs die-cut
The border is the finished edge of the patch. Three main types with different cost implications:
- Merrowed border (default, cheapest): the classic thick overlock stitch edge. Works only on round, oval, and simple curved shapes. No added cost — this is the baseline.
- Laser-cut border: supports any shape with sharp edges. Adds $0.30–$0.50 per patch. Best for shields, rectangles, or logos with straight edges.
- Die-cut border: the premium option — cleanest edges, supports intricate custom shapes. Adds $0.50–$1.00 per patch. Best for licensed characters, mascots, or highly detailed silhouettes.
If your design is a simple circle or oval, stick with merrowed. If it has straight edges, laser-cut is the pragmatic middle option. Only pay for die-cut when the edge detail actually matters visually.
Backing type — sew-on vs iron-on vs hook-and-loop
The backing determines how the patch attaches to a garment:
